Encinitas ("Small Oaks" in Spanish) is a beach city in the North County area of San Diego County, California, approximately 25 miles (40 km) north of San Diego and 95 miles (153 km) south of Los Angeles. The Kumeyaay people were the original inhabitants of Encinitas. During the 1769 Portolá expedition, Gaspar de Portolá encountered the local Kumeyaay village of Jeyal near the San Elijo Lagoon. The area, named Los Encinos by Portolá for its oak trees, likely had a settlement called Hakutl, near present-day New Encinitas. Following Mexican independence, Rancho Las Encinitas was established in 1842 when Andrés Ybarra was granted land, giving rise to the city's name. Encinitas, meaning "little oaks," evolved over time as settlers arrived. In 1881, Jabez Pitcher founded Old Encinitas. Later, in 1986, 69.3% of voters approved the city's incorporation, uniting the communities of Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain.
